The TIFF Ethical Film Award was launched in 2023 in partnership with Sumitomo Corporation, with the aim of raising awareness of social issues such as the environment, poverty and discrimination, and fostering understanding of diversity through film and moving image. From the titles selected for this year’s TIFF, three films that meet the ethical principles of “thoughts and actions that empathize with people, society and the environment” will be nominated, and the jury will select one film for the award.
 
Isomura Hayato to Head TIFF Ethical Film Award Jury
We are pleased to announce that this year’s Jury President will be the acclaimed actor Isomura Hayato. Beyond his compelling screen presence in numerous hit titles, Isomura has recently dedicated his efforts to regional revitalization and sustainable cultural initiatives through film, including hosting the Shizuoka Film Festival (Festival de Shizuoka) in his hometown. To engage younger audiences, three selected members from the TIFF Student PR team will join him on the jury.
 
The award ceremony and a talk session featuring Isomura are scheduled to take place on November 2 (further details will be announced on the official website and other platforms).

Today, we absorb vast amounts of information in seconds through a small screen. I often feel we fall into the trap of believing we understand something instantly, constantly searching for quick answers. Yet, when it comes to deepening our awareness and understanding of social issues, the process of reaching those answers is what truly matters.
 
Cinema possesses the unique power to pause our hurried pace, allowing us to experience that very process through the lives and emotions of others. I am committed to taking the thoughts, hopes, and wishes woven into these films by each filmmaker deeply to heart, and to reflecting on them together with everyone.
